Personality:
Jamie is above all lighthearted and friendly, and his Scottish brogue usually endears him to most people. He is passionate, can be quick to anger, but also quick to forgive. He quite likes the ladies, although he finds it frustratingly difficult to pick up women from any time period much different from his own. He likes sleeping, and can often be caught napping at inopportune moments. Jamie is simple and straightforward, less unintelligent and more impatient: he is a quick learner but if he doesn’t or can’t understand something he just boils it down to the basics, slaps a name on it he can understand, and moves on. He cares much more about practical results than knowledge, often asking how something can be killed and is it worth eating rather than wondering why it does what it does. Jamie is given to acts of physical courage bordering (almost always) on stupidity, and never avoids a fight (often starting many). Jamie sees the Doctor as a friend and mentor, and while he has learned a lot through his experiences, he is also convinced that the Doctor needs his help, and is loath to leave him alone. Once he got used to the Doctor’s ways, he never worried about new experiences, and rolls with the punches. Loyal to a fault, the only time Jamie is ever worried or concerned is when his friends are in danger.
Skills:
Jamie’s skill set is more suited to 18th-century Scotland than to many places the Doctor takes him, but he makes up for this in his ability to learn quickly as he goes and for his sheer pig-headed tenacity. He is usually the one to come up with the so-simple-it’s-brilliant plan. Subtlety is just a word he has trouble spelling (among others, as Jamie is only barely literate). Jamie is handy in a fight. He usually always carries a dirk and sgian dubh, and is an apt brawler. He is also trained with a broadsword. The fact that the guns of his time period were extremely difficult to aim makes him a crack shot when he uses a properly calibrated firearm. Although right-handed, curiously, he tends to shoot left-handed. Despite only being trained in primitive weaponry, nothing delights Jamie more than playing with alien ray guns, and he’s worryingly adept at figuring them out. Jamie also has an uncanny ability to sense danger, and will get a “vibe” about a dangerous hall or an imminent attack. Jamie also seems to lead a charmed life, not only escaping the Battle of Culloden alive but has also been shot, stabbed, infected with alien diseases, and survived them all. He is also highly musical (his primary skill in fact), skilled on pipe and drum as well as being a fair singer, though he rarely gets a chance to display it.
History:
Jamie was (he reckons) about 16 when he first stepped off the battlefield of Culloden Moor into the Doctor’s TARDIS. Although he feels as though he’s been travelling with the Doctor for about ten years, he still acts like an 18 year old most of the time. He encountered many things with the Doctor, including Cybermen, Daleks, Sontarans, Yeti, and other standard baddies. But Jamie tends to remember the good times most: like knowing Victoria and Zoe, meeting the Brigadier, eating ice cream for the first time and seeing twin sunsets on some alien planet (and, okay, he wouldn’t deny that bagging a Yeti or nailing a Sontaran’s probic vent can’t be good times). After the Doctor was captured by the Time Lords, Jamie was sent back to his own time after a memory wipe. However, this was less than effective on him, and as a Celestial Intervention Agent the Doctor was able to request the return of Jamie as a traveling companion. Joined briefly again by Victoria, Jamie traveled with the Doctor for many more years before the TARDIS (as could be expected, though it hadn’t happened since the Time Lords were in control) began acting up…
